VLTrader System Requirements

Hardware

  • Processor equivalent to a Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz or better
  • 1 GB RAM minimum, 1.5GB RAM recommended for 64-bit environments
  • 10 Mbit network connection (100 Mbit recommended)
  • Must have a properly configured Internet connection
  • Minimum of 500 MB of disk space for the VLTrader application and associated files (1 Gb recommended)
  • Disk space required for transferred files depends on number of trading partners, size of the files transferred, and number of files transferred (Recommended minimum disk space for files is 5 MB per trading partner)
  • Minimum of 100 MB of temporary space

Note: Greater hardware requirements may be necessary depending upon the number of trading partners/simultaneous connections desired. Greater hardware requirements may also be necessary depending upon your choice of Operating System.

Supported Operating Systems

32-bit

  • Windows XP Professional/2003/Vista/7/2008 (Windows Vista Business Edition and above or Server Operating Systems are strongly recommended)
  • AIX 5.3, 6.1 (RS/6000)
  • HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11), v2 (B.11.23) PA-RISC
  • Solaris SPARC versions 9, 10
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5, 6 AS, ES, WS (See Knowledgebase item 1730)
  • SuSe Linux Enterprise 10, 11
  • UBUNTU 10.04 Server
  • CentOS 5

64-bit

  • Windows XP Professional/2003/Vista/7/2008 R2 (Windows Vista Business Edition and above or Server Operating Systems are strongly recommended)
  • AIX 5.3, 6.1 (RS/6000)
  • HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11), v2 (B.11.23), v3 (B.11.31) Itanium
  • Solaris SPARC version 10
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5, 6 AS, ES, WS (See Knowledgebase item 1730)
  • SuSe Linux Enterprise 10, 11
  • UBUNTU 10.04 Server
  • CentOS 5

Note: It may be necessary to upgrade to the current version of VersaLex to run on the listed Operating Systems.

Supported Virtual Environments

  • VMware (vSphere Hypervisor) ESX/ESXi
  • Microsoft Hyper-V

Note: Must be running on Virtual aware hardware. The minimum recommended hardware (above) is a minimum requirement for each virtual environment running VersaLex. Under heavy load, Cleo has seen up to 25% less throughput in a virtual environment compared to a similarly configured native environment.

Java Runtime Environment

Support for Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5 has been sunsetted with the release of VersaLex 4.3. Customers can continue to run with their current version of LexiCom/VLTrader/VLProxy and JRE 1.5 after this time, but will be required to upgrade to JRE 1.6 as part of any Cleo support request. Cleo bundles the JRE in its installer and product, so upgrading the VersaLex JRE will not affect other products installed on the same computer.

Unlimited VL Trader License

The Unlimited License of VL Trader can be installed on a single server with one to many CPUs. This VL Trader license allows a customer to utilize the full capacity of their server without having to worry about any license restriction for the number of Trading Relationships (connections) allowed. The actual number of Trading Relationships that can be supported is dependant upon many factors. These factors fall into three general categories - server configuration, network configuration and payload characteristics. Specifically, these factors include, but are not limited to:

  • Server Configuration
  • Speed and performance of CPU(s)
  • Speed and performance of the disk subsystem
  • Amount of memory in the server
  • Load of other applications running on the server
  • Network Configuration
  • Internal network speed and traffic
  • Network speed and traffic between the internal network and that of the remote connections (usually the Internet)
  • Firewall and router performance and load- Payload
  • Size of data files being transferred
  • Frequency of data transmissions
  • Compression and encryption options utilized
  • Processing speed at the remote connection

As a general reference, Cleo benchmark testing (performed on servers that meet the minimum requirements) show a practical limit of 500 trading relationships and 300 concurrent sessions. Cleo provides a high performance communications engine. However, it is the marriage of this Cleo software with the supplied hardware as well as the operational environment that determines the actual performance.

The standard base unlimited license can be used for up to 2 utilzed CPU sockets on the server. If the server has additional utilized CPU sockets or the server is upgraded with additional CPU sockets, then additional licensing is required.

Other Requirements

  • The computer must have a static IP address. The IP address must either be a static external IP address or VLProxy must be used. If VLProxy is used, the computer it resides on must have a static external IP address.
  • If the computer is behind a firewall, appropriate IP addresses and ports must be open based on VLTrader configuration and trading partners to allow the necessary traffic to be transmitted to and from your trading partners
  • To ensure optimal performance, VLTrader should be run on a dedicated computer (e.g. VLTrader should not be run on the same computer as a Web Server)
  • A physical Graphical User Interface (GUI) is required unless utilizing the optional Cleo Web-based GUI.
  • For Windows XP/2003/7/2008 R2:
VLTrader must be installed as a Windows Service. (By default, Windows services run under a local system account and do not see mapped network drives. If you must access a network drive through VLTrader, then you will have to use full network path names (UNC paths) instead of mapped network drives. Also, the network share permissions should be reviewed.)

Cleo Web-Based GUI Requirements

  • Internet Explorer version 7 or above and Firefox version 3 or above
  • Minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 is highly recommended.
  • On Unix, a third-party Xvfb (X virtual framebuffer) application may be required.

AS/400 Network Access Requirements

VLTrader can integrate with AS/400 file system shares, both IFS and NFS. The following AS/400 OS versions are supported.

  • i5/OS V5R4
  • i5/OS V6R1
  • i5/OS V7R1

Internet Requirements

  • The computer that will run VLTrader must have a persistent connection to the Internet. This computer must have a dedicated external IP address associated with it (directly on the computer or via NAT). You must be prepared to open the appropriate IP addresses and ports on your firewall and/or proxy server to allow the necessary traffic to be transmitted to and from your trading partner.

Additional Requirements

  • Java Requirements
  • Protocol-based Requirements
  • Database Requirements
  • VLProxy System Requirements
